The Eucharist and the Mass

The celebration of the Mass is the center of the life of the Church. The heart of the Mass is the Eucharistic Prayer. The Catholic Church teaches that the sacrament of the holy Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life” (CCC 1324). Catholics believe that Jesus’ ongoing presence is physical and spiritual. We come into communion with Jesus in this way during the celebration of the Eucharist.

The importance of Eucharistic Adoration

When Catholics say they are “going to adoration,” they are referring to eucharistic adoration. In the most basic terms, this is the worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass. The eucharistic host is displayed in a monstrance on the altar so that all can see and pray in the presence of Christ.
