Julius Caesar – Shakespeare Retreat 2022

Led by Fr. Stephen Rowan, this retreat uses Shakespeare to challenge you to find sound reasons to take wise action and make positive change in your life.

In Julius Caesar, Shakespeare looks at the politics of his time – late 16th century England – through the lens of Rome in the first century before Christ. He shows how envy, resentment, mutual suspicion, and scapegoating are the driving forces of “regime change” and that they succeed especially well if people are easily led by slick-sounding crowd-pleasers and demagogues. Even though great change is promised by the death of Caesar, Shakespeare points out a great lesson of history: “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”

Just as Roman politics was a mirror for Shakespeare’s time, Shakespeare’s plays are a mirror for ours. In this retreat, we will consider how Julius Caesar shows the importance of using irony as a perspective on events and of finding “positive models” for imitation; they also challenge us to find sound reasons for taking wise action and making positive change.
