SUMMARY:Solemnity of Pentecost
DESCRIPTION:The Solemnity of Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection.  On this day, we celebrate the birth of the Catholic Church, because the Pentecost was the beginning of the apostles’ earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations.  Pentecost marks the last day of the Easter Season.\n“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,\nthey were all in one place together.\nAnd suddenly there came from the sky\na noise like a strong driving wind,\nand it filled the entire house in which they were.\nThen there appeared to them tongues as of fire,\nwhich parted and came to rest on each one of them.\nAnd they were all filled with the Holy Spirit\nand began to speak in different tongues,\nas the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”\nActs: 2:1-11\nThe symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Red decorations as well as celebrations are appropriate, similar to any other birthday. Special prayers are often said just for Pentecost.\nVeni, Sancte Spiritus\nCome, Holy Spirit, come!\nAnd from your celestial home\nShed a ray of light divine!\nCome, Father of the poor!\nCome, source of all our store!\nCome, within our bosoms shine.\nYou, of comforters the best;\nYou, the soul’s most welcome guest;\nSweet refreshment here below;\nIn our labor, rest most sweet;\nGrateful coolness in the heat;\nSolace in the midst of woe.\nO most blessed Light divine,\nShine within these hearts of yours,\nAnd our inmost being fill!\nWhere you are not, we have naught,\nNothing good in deed or thought,\nNothing free from taint of ill.\nHeal our wounds, our strength renew;\nOn our dryness pour your dew;\nWash the stains of guilt away:\nBend the stubborn heart and will;\nMelt the frozen, warm the chill;\nGuide the steps that go astray.\nOn the faithful, who adore\nAnd confess you, evermore\nIn your sevenfold gift descend;\nGive them virtue’s sure reward;\nGive them your salvation, Lord;\nGive them joys that never end. Amen.\nAlleluia.\n \n
